This website has been set up as an introduction to a touring exhibition that celebrates the creative spirit and vision of one of Canada’s most important scenographers whose work has had a major influence on the development of the art of theatre design in Canada. It is also an introduction to the theatre collection in the LW Conolly archive at the University of Guelph library. This exhibition has been designed and curated by Sean Breaugh and Patricia Flood.

Born in Rosetown, Saskatchewan in 1937, Cameron Porteous trained at the Wimbledon College of Art in London, England.  After returning to Canada in 1969 he became Head of Design at the Vancouver Playhouse in 1972 under Artistic Director Christopher Newton. This creative partnership continued when Newton became Artistic Director of the Shaw Festival and appointed him as Head of Design from 1980-1997.

Porteous has had a prolific career in theatre and opera design, working in most major theatres across Canada as well as designing extensively for film and television. His work combines an international perspective with a distinctly personal style of theatrical design which flourished during a robust period of Canadian theatre history.  He led the way in expanding our view of design beyond traditional models, embracing perspectives from beyond our borders and anticipating our modern multi-cultural and multi-media theatre. He continues to work in theatre, film and television and has influenced many emerging designers through his teaching, mentoring and creative work.

 

LW Conolly Archives

Since 1969 the library at the University of Guelph has been acquiring theatre collections, and in 1999, these were collectively named the L.W. Conolly Theatre Archives in honour of Dr. Leonard Conolly, who fostered the development and preservation of the archives of professional theatres in Ontario while serving as Chair of the University’s Drama Department. The collections are focussed on the work of Bernard Shaw; modern Ontario theatre companies; and playwrights, actors, directors and designers active in Ontario theatre life. Over the years, the Library’s commitment has grown significantly to the point that it has become the largest collection of Canadian theatre and Shaw-related materials in Canada.
